Our Story

Callum Mills, our director has had an interest in manufacturing since a boy. Coming from a family of precision engineers it was naturally the industry he chose to pursue. Whilst attending Haywood Engineering College (now Haywood Academy) he studied NVQ level 2 engineering. In 2014 he started a NVQ level 3 apprenticeship at Northwood Food Machinery where he trained to become a fitter/machinist. After finishing at Newcastle-Under-Lyme college in 2018 he went full time at Northwood Food Machinery.

The vision for Proto Precision Engineering Ltd started back in August 2020 with Callum purchasing his first metal working lathe. The Colchester Student that he purchased was quickly restored and put back into a working state. Whilst a few projects did come in, the business idea took a back step due to a career change in to maintenance within the food industry.

Whilst at his new job he found a unit local to where he was living in Market Drayton. The idea was back in full swing, he purchased another Colchester Student lathe and a Bridgeport milling machine. Investing lots of time and money into equipment, the jobs started to pour in. Embedding his name in the local area for machining.

The unit quickly became too small. In June 2024 an excellent opportunity in Stoke on Trent, his home town arose. This was a unit that was 5 times bigger than the previous. In December 2024 orders flooded in yet again. Something needed to change in order to consistently get work out of the door. Proto Precision Engineering Ltd took priority and Callum was forced to leave his job and pursue the business full time. Since that, the business has invested in 4 CNC machines to help keep up with demand. Callum has built up a portfolio of customers that trust the reliable work that goes out the door at Proto Precision Engineering Ltd.

That vision isn't complete yet.
